TKM Diary Entry
by Chelsea Cartwright
The trial was a long one. Mr. Ewell’s face was reddened and he looked like a tomato. Jem really thought Atticus would win, said all the evidence was right there. Dill was silent the whole time but started cryin’ once cause of how cruel Mr. Gilmer was bein’ to Tom.
I had to take Dill outside and we found out
that Mr. Raymond isn’t really a drunk, guess he just wants the town to look at
him that way. The jury was gone for
a long time, at least a couple hours. But
right away you could tell they convicted Tom ‘cause no one would look at him.
Jem was really mad when they all said Tom was guilty, he could’a jumped
over the railing and started yellin’ at them.
Atticus whispered somethin’ to Tom then
walked out of the courtroom with his jacket and everything in his hands.
Everyone said he had done a good job in provin’ that Tom was innocent,
but the Ewell’s are white and Tom’s not, at least that’s what Jem told me.
I didn’t really understand all of the case, but Atticus thought they
still had a chance of winning an appeal or somethin’.
I better go.
I think someone is comin’ and I’m supposed to be asleep.
I guess the appeal is gonna happen sometime in the next few weeks.
Bye,
