Investigation 3: Mean Absolute Deviation The students will first learn to calculate the M.A.D. by hand then by using calculator. The M.A.D. is the average of the difference from the data to the mean. To determine the M.A.D. you add the differences of each piece of data from the mean and then divide by the number of pieces of data. After calculating the M.A.D. we will explore how transforming the data affects the M.A.D. Important Terms Measures of center: Mean, Median, Mode Measures of variability: Range, Interquartile Range, M.A.D.
