Gender Equality and Men: Learning from Practice
Ruxton, Sandy (ed) (2004) Oxford: Oxfam GB.
(Full text of all chapters)

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_do/resources/geneqmen.htm

Oxfam is concerned about gender inequality because the majority of the world’s poor are women: around 70 per cent of the 1.3 billion people who live in extreme poverty, on less than one dollar a day, are women and girls. Gender discrimination, or the denial of women’s basic human rights, is also a major cause of poverty. Men and women experience many aspects of poverty differently and ignoring these differences risks further entrenching poverty and the subordination of women.

'THOSE DAMN BOYS AGAIN' HOW TO GET BOYS ACHIEVING

UN EXPERT GROUP ON ROLE OF MEN,
BOYS IN ACHIEVING GENDER EQUALITY

http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2003/dev2442.doc.htm

Gender inequality is an important factor contributing to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.  The spread of HIV/AIDS is significantly related to gender relations.  The vulnerability of women and girls to HIV/AIDS is directly related to the attitudes and behavior of men and boys, as well as to persistent stereotypes about masculinities and about what is appropriate and acceptable behavior for women.  Ideologies of masculinity and "manliness", which encourage men to display sexual prowess by having multiple partners by stressing aggressiveness and dominance and lack of responsibility in sexual relationships, put men themselves and their partners at risk. .  Achieving gender equality would also require greater sharing of domestic responsibilities between men and women.

WORKING WITH MEN AND BOYS TO CHALLENGE SEXISM AND END MEN'S VIOLENCE (Michael Kaufman, 1997)-

http://www.europrofem.org/02.info/22contri/2.04.en/4en.viol/09en_vio.htm

This paper sketches a framework for understanding violence and its relation to the lives and experiences of men. It then looks at two sets of activities: the White Ribbon Campaign, the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women, and, work with boys within the educational system.
