The Program
(view as a PowerPoint)

SCI-MA-TECH is based at Traverse City Central High School’s campus adjacent to Northwestern Michigan College. The students participate for three years, 10th through 12th grade. Grand Traverse area students apply for admission in the spring of their 9th grade year. Students receive three credit hours each year in math, science, technology and independent study.

The SCI-MA-TECH program allows students to immerse themselves in the study of advanced math, honors level science and the related technology while participating in authentic scientific research. This program offers students a diverse learning environment, including hands-on projects, computer programming, computer aided drafting (CAD) classes, and the use of the latest technology equipment. A career internship with a mentor and an individualized research project are two key components of the program.

Students attend a three-hour block, held Monday through Friday, starting at 7:05 each morning. These students attend school an additional hour each day. The teaching staff consists of a team of professionals with advanced degrees in science, math and technology, that work together to individualize instruction.

While traditional high school curriculum is covered, SCI-MA-TECH alters and compacts the scope and sequence to allow accelerated study and individual investigative projects.

In 10th grade, students are involved in guided research projects, while in grades 11 and 12, they have the opportunity to pursue approved individualized topics. The sophomore research projects will be displayed and defended at the first annual Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium at the NMC Hagerty Center.

During the summer between the 11th and 12th grades, the students participate in a 40-hour internship in the career area of their choice in the community. They are partnered with a business mentor/sponsor and are required to give both a written and oral presentation in the fall to their peers and the SCI-MA-TECH staff.

During their senior year they present their Senior Research paper on the research topic they have been working on independently for 9 months. This is written in the scientific method format suitable for publication in a student scientific journal. They will also present their abstracts at an open science & math forum locally and selected papers will be presented at the Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium.
