CONGRATULATIONS - Central Grade's OM Team is going to the World Competition at the University of Maryland from May 31 - June 2.  - Go Team!

2007-2008 School Year

Central Grade has one OM team this year, including Elena R., Katie L., Fisher D., Ivan S., Noah M., Abby C., and one new member Daphne C., and their coach Mrs. Rothney.  This team is now competing in division two, and are doing the problem "Dino' Stories."

A congratulations to our OM team, for they have earned second place in the regional competition and they will now advance to the state competition at East Kentwood High School in Grand Rapids on April 19. In the next few weeks, the team will be working hard on improving their technology, skit, costumes, and their presentation in hopes of qualifying for the world competition. Good luck!

In Odyssey of the Mind, kids solve complicated problems.  Being an O.M. team member requires commitment, creativity, teamwork, and the ability to solve challenging problems. Usually in March teams compete in a district tournament.  The teams that come in first and second in each problem go on to compete in the regional competition.  The formula for deciding how many teams go from the regional competition to the state is one team for every four competing in each problem or fraction.  So if there are 17 teams then the five highest-ranked teams are promoted to the state competition.  Children learn that challenges can be fun, and that teamwork is the key.

At each level of competition--regional, state, and world-- the teams are judged by three standards: a long-term problem, which involves a short (typically eight minute) skit that follows certain parameters;  a spontaneous problem, which may be hands-on (such as building a log cabin entirely out of straws) or verbal (such as identifying as many words as possible that have two or more synonyms). The judges present awards to the teams for creativity, thinking on your feet, and teamwork.
