Making Friends in Preschool
Children in preschool are developing skills to form friendships with others in their age group. Parents and teachers can play an important role in helping a child to develop long lasting friendships by:
Turn taking in conversation and play, or using the words friend, friendship, friendly when describing and observing behavior.
Giving your child a script to use for joining into play with their peers, for instance, "May I play with you?" or "Do you want to read a book?"
Talking to your child about how their playtime went with another child and let him/her know about the friendly behaviors you saw during their play.
Pointing out when you see others being friendly, encourage your child to share she/he sees friends.
